Why Asaduddin Owaisi’s statement on using Haj Subsidy for Girls Education should be welcomed

A couple of days after the Saudi Arabia increased India’s annual Haj quota from an earlier 1.36 lakh to 1.70 lakh, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi gave a big statement. He welcomed the movement but demanded the government that the Haj subsidy should be abolished and be allotted for the Muslim girl’s education. A day after it was reported that the Haj quota has been increased, this prominent Muslim leader and chief of AIMIM expressed through a tweet the proper and efficient way of utilization of Haj subsidy that is being sent to pilgrims by the Indian government.

The Reason

The increase in Indian annual Haj quota by Saudi Arabia was a drastic change and is considered to be the biggest expansion in the last 29 years. Just a day after this transformation, Owaisi on behalf of Muslims tweeted that the Haj Subsidy should be used in a proper way.

Asaduddin OwaisiHe appealed to the Indian government to root out this Haj subsidy and allot the money in the favour of Muslim girls for their education.  The announcement was made by our Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in this regard. One of the most enduring ironies of Indian politics is that the Muslim girls are always restricted to education in the Society and this hinders their growth on a huge scale. However, it is not a surprising fact that the Muslims have to bargain for their rights and also in choosing the leaders which can take care of their issues.

Naqvi expressing pleasure on the signing of this agreement stated that the meeting was very fruitful and the problems related to transport, pilgrimage, safety and accommodation facilities will be solved. Also, the relationship with Saudi Arabia will be a strengthening one after this meeting. The services offered to the pilgrims were also taken into consideration which indicates the firm commitment of Saudi Arabia toward the welfare of the pilgrims.

The Impact

Muslims add up to only three percent in administrative services like IAS, IPS, etc. In 2013, a book called ‘Six years after Sachar’ revealed that the conditions of Muslim girls have hardly improved. Owaisi’s statement that the subsidy amount of 690 crores should be allotted and utilized towards educating Muslim girls must be accepted with seriousness. It is very much necessary for the Muslim youth especially the girls be educated properly as it will be beneficial for the country and the society. The scarcity of Girls Hostels and schools and the lack of exposure to Muslim girls has always been a problem and 690 crores is a huge amount. A Haj is obligatory for the Muslim who has been blessed with health and wealth and is capable of accepting the expenditure. Muslim doesn’t need any subsidy for that. Instead, it is necessary to use that money for providing a great future to the Muslim girls. The government who has made a panel of 6 members should welcome and consider the Owaisi statement as it is beneficial for the country itself and can also strengthen the Indian and Muslim community.
